In both the books and show, we are told Ciri's parents died at sea, leaving Ciri an orphan to be raised by her grandmother, the Queen of Cintra. But in the books, Ciri's father Emhyr fakes this tragedy and accidentally kills his wife, Pavetta, in the process.
